SENATOR SEAN RYAN ANNOUNCES FUNDING FOR SECURITY UPGRADES AT GRAND ISLAND SCHOOLS

Officials Announce $138,000 Safety and Security Upgrade Project Throughout Grand Island Central School District

GRAND ISLAND, N.Y. – Today, September 16, 2022, New York State Senator Sean Ryan joined school officials to announce he has secured a $112,500 New York State grant to fund the bulk of $138,000 in security improvements being made to schools in the Grand Island Central School District.

The project, which officials anticipate will be completed by spring 2023, includes the installation of wireless access control systems in all interior classroom and office doors throughout the school district. All schools in the district are already equipped with exterior access control systems, which require employees to gain access to the school building with a swipe of an ID card.

Extending access control to interior doors will provide additional security in emergency situations, allowing administrators to remotely lock and unlock all doors in a matter of seconds. The locks will also allow teachers and classroom staff to respond locally, reducing the risk of blind lockouts that could leave students stuck in the hallway.

Senator Sean Ryan said, “This investment will, first and foremost, provide Grand Island schools with extra measures to ensure the safety of their students. But investing in the safety of students has another major benefit – kids learn and develop best in environments where they feel secure. These state-of-the-art security upgrades will help keep students in Grand Island safe and provide their parents with a little extra peace of mind when they send their kids off to school next year.”

Dr. Rubie Harris, Assistant Superintendent, Grand Island Central School District, said, “Grand Island has been focused on the safety and security of our buildings and students for many years. This investment will assist us in expediting our plan to increase safety and security within our schools. Students come to school each day to learn. Providing them an additional layer of security as they come to school eases the mind of the District, parents, staff, and teachers.”
