NYS Senator Weik Hosts Diaper Drive to Support Allied Foundation
November 6, 2023
Bohemia, NY – October 31, 2023 – New York State Senator Alexis Weik (R-Bohemia), recently hosted a weeklong diaper drive to support the Allied Foundation Diaper Bank. Senator Weik and the members of our communities collected 17,346 diapers, 4,114 baby wipes, 3,430 female care items along with other items including baby shampoo, rash cream, baby formula and breast pumps. All items were donated to Allied Foundation and will be distributed to families in need across Long Island.
"Members of our communities are still struggling with inflation, the expense of basic goods, such as diapers, has skyrocketed. Diapers, for both babies and seniors, are an essential need and no one should have to go without them. After learning about Allied Foundation and the amazing work they do for Long Island, I knew I wanted to partner with them for this event. I cannot thank our community enough for the incredible outpour of generous donations,” said Senator Weik.
“Anytime there is an increase in the cost of basic necessities, it impacts people living in poverty and those who lack the resources necessary to meet their basic needs. Babies from low-income households that cannot afford diapers are at the greatest risk of several health and safety concerns,” said Heather Edwards, Executive Director of The Allied Foundation. “Through the diaper drive, Senator Weik and members of her district are making a difference in the lives of families across Long Island to provide them with clean, dry diapers.”
Allied Foundation operates Long Island's only Diaper Bank and is the Long Island’s sole member of the National Diaper Bank Network and the Baby2Baby Network. Through donations and events, the foundation collects, purchases and distributes diapers through their network of 60 non-profit, community-based partners and to families in crisis.
Diaper need impacts the physical, mental and economic well-being of children and families across the region. Without access to clean, dry diapers, families resort to unsafe practices including reusing soiled underwear, resulting in infection, rash and poor health outcomes. Mothers are at risk for increased maternal depression and parents are unable to access childcare, which requires a daily supply of diapers.
Since its inception in 2019, the Allied Foundation has distributed 2.9 million diapers, impacting more than 300,000 families.
