Senator Cordell Cleare's Human Trafficking Bills Sign Into Law In New York City Ceremony

SENATOR CORDELL CLEARE’S HUMAN TRAFFICKING BILLS SIGNED INTO LAW IN NEW YORK CITY CEREMONY

Enactment will Lead to Greater Outreach and Study the Connection to Social Media

New York, NY - September 27, 2023 - In a notable display of leadership, Senator Cordell Cleare’s legislation played a pivotal role in Governor Kathy Hochul's bill signing event today, where several consequential bills that were introduced and sponsored by the Senator, will make significant strides toward addressing the pressing issue of human trafficking were enacted into law.

Senate Bill S395, led by Senator Cleare, directs the New York State Interagency Task Force on Human Trafficking to investigate how social media platforms may be linked to human trafficking. This legislation seeks to understand and address the use of social media in this criminal activity.

Senate Bill S5527, also sponsored by Senator Cleare, aligns with Assembly Bill A3720, which ensures that information regarding services for human trafficking victims is made readily available to the public. This measure aims to increase awareness and access to support for individuals affected by human trafficking.

Senate Bill S5827, championed by Senator Cleare, corresponds with Assembly Bill A4586 and requires lactation rooms in service areas maintained by the New York State Thruway Authority to display information related to services for human trafficking victims. 

"These bills collectively make strides against human trafficking by investigating its digital roots, increasing public awareness, and ensuring vital information is accessible where it's needed most," said Senator Cleare with unwavering determination. About Senator Cordell Cleare 

Senator Cleare is currently serving in her first full term from District 30, representing Central Harlem, East Harlem (El Barrio), West Harlem, a portion of Manhattan’s Upper West Side, and the Washington Heights neighborhoods. Raised in Harlem, Cleare is the second woman in the State’s history to hold this seat in the State Senate. She is currently the Chair of the Senate Committee on Aging.
