Legislation co-sponsored by Senator Dan Stec (R,C-Queensbury) to make it easier to recruit sheriffs and undersheriffs today passed the state Senate. Senate bill S2695B would eliminate a training requirement that excludes non-law enforcement personnel from running for elected sheriff and appointed undersheriff positions. This training requirement had barred otherwise candidates with no prior law enforcement experience from running for sheriff.
“Sheriffs derive their law enforcement authorities from voters,” said Stec. Current law blocks candidates who lack law enforcement experience, but may be qualified due to their experiences in government and administration, from running for these important positions. The legislation I co-sponsored and helped pass today would eliminate this training obstruction and open up sheriff and undersheriff recruitment to a wider range of qualified men and women. I’m pleased this passed the Senate and urge the Assembly to take it up as well.”
