QUEENS, NY - Following the announcement of a contract deal reached between Elmhurst Hospital and Mt. Sinai residents represented by CIR-SEIU, Senate Labor Chair Jessica Ramos issued the following statement:
“Elmhurst Hospital is not just another hospital. Even before it became the national epicenter of the pandemic, it served our working-class and immigrant communities with compassion and care. As Labor Chair, as the state senator who represents this community, and as someone who was born at Elmhurst Hospital, I’m immensely proud that management and the residents have reached a deal. Wage parity, an 18% retroactive raise, and the beginnings of a solution to issues around hazard pay were made possible by this strike.
Let this be a lesson to hospital systems and workers alike - organizing lifts the entire workplace up. Patients, residents, and the entire community they serve are better off because these residents had the courage to demand better.”
