New York State Senator Joseph P. Addabbo, Jr. wants his constituents to know that the World Trade Center Health Program has now added all forms of uterine cancer, including endometrial cancer, to the list health conditions that will be covered by the federal government for those that became sick after the World Trade Center attacks in 2001.
This change will immediate allow qualified program participants to receive screenings, treatments, monitoring and benefits counseling with no out-of-pocket costs for all forms of uterine or endometrial cancer, as well as being able to seek compensation from the September 11th Victim Compensation Fund due to being exposed to the toxic air around Ground Zero in the aftermath of the 9/11 attacks.
“The terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001 had a profound effect on all New Yorkers, especially those who lived, worked, and volunteered around Ground Zero in the aftermath. So many people — especially the first responders — were exposed to toxic dust and other carcinogens in the air as we tried to pick up the pieces after the tragic events of that day,” Addabbo said. “The effects weren’t always immediate as hundreds of thousands of New Yorkers eventually became sick with ailments including many different forms of cancer due to being around Ground Zero. As we continue to learn more of the effects of being around Ground Zero at that time, I am happy that the federal government has now included uterine cancers and endometrial cancer in the list of health conditions that will be covered in the World Trade Center Health Program. It is vital that we get these people the health services that they need, and I encourage anyone who was around Ground Zero and developed uterine or endometrial cancer to look into joining the WTC Health Fund to see if they are eligible to become a member and have their healthcare services taken care of.”
