On February 9, State Senator Joseph P. Addabbo, Jr. visited with the Student Council at P.S. 306 in Woodhaven to hear their ideas for how they would redesign their school’s playground. The students are concerned about the condition of the black mats on the playground floor since many areas are sunken in and there is a hole in one of the mats that needs to be covered with a safety cone so none of the students get hurt. They also want to make the entire playground more accessible to students with disabilities and special needs so they can take full advantage of their school equipment and be included during recess. They even had visions of renovating the basketball court, adding in a track, and repainting everything in their school colors.
“Seeing these students take such an interest in their school and thinking of how they can make it more inclusive for all students is wonderful to see,” Addabbo said. “Knowing that these fifth graders won’t even be at P.S. 306 next year as they transition into middle school, but the fact that they are still exploring how they can make a difference for the students that come after them is the definition of leadership. I commend the Student Council for their forward thinking and will do my best to help them achieve their goals any way I can.”
