New York State Sen. Joseph Griffo, R-C-Rome, and Assemblywoman Marianne Buttenschon, D-C-Marcy, announced today that two bills they sponsored have been signed into law by the governor.
The legislation includes:
- S6493/A6727: The bill allows the Oriskany Volunteer Exempt Firemen’s Benevolent Association, first chartered in 1970, to update their charter by enhancing their purpose and goals and removing language limiting the use of foreign fire insurance premium taxes received by the Association.
- S6591/A6907: The bill authorizes the Oneida County District Attorney to appoint five stenographers. As a result of changes to the state’s discovery law that were enacted in 2019, the Oneida County District Attorney requested this legislation. The changes have increased and accelerated requirements on the District Attorney relative to the provision of the minutes from the grand jury to defense counsel and have created a significant strain on the resources of the District Attorney's office.
“I thank the governor for signing these bills into law,” Sen. Griffo said. “This legislation will help the Oriskany Volunteer Exempt Firemen’s Benevolent Association update their charter and the Oneida County District Attorney’s Office, which has been burdened by the flawed changes to the discovery process that were implemented and supported by the legislative majorities and governor. I will continue to work to help the individuals, organizations, schools, local governments and other entities that I represent in the Senate.”
“I want to thank Governor Hochul for signing these important pieces of local legislation,” Assemblywoman Buttenschon said. “This will allow the Oriskany Volunteer Exempt Firemen’s Benevolent Association to update their charter and enhance their purpose. Second, the Oneida County District Attorney had requested this legislation to help support the needs in his office. Public safety has always been a priority of mine and I will continue to work with my colleagues and local officials for the welfare of our community.”
