Griffo and Buttenschon: Bill increasing supreme and family court judgeships passed by Legislature
June 16, 2023
New York State Sen. Joseph Griffo, R-C-Rome, and Assemblywoman Marianne Buttenschon, D-Marcy, announced today legislation they supported increasing the number of judges in the state has been passed by the Senate and Assembly.
The bill (S7534/A7669) would add a family court judgeship in the counties of Oneida, Albany, Chemung, Erie, Monroe, Niagara, Onondaga, St. Lawrence, Suffolk and Westchester.
It also would increase the number of supreme court judges in several judicial districts, none of which are in Sen. Griffo or Assemblywoman Buttenschon's legislative districts.
“I am pleased that this bill has been passed by the Legislature,” Sen. Griffo said. “This legislation will help to address backlogs in cases and will lead to a faster administration of justice.”
“We hosted numerous youth in crisis roundtables that identified the need for another Family Court Judge in Oneida County,” Assemblywoman Buttenschon said. “This legislation that I co-sponsored will assist our overburdened court system to identify our youth in crisis and help adjudicate cases in a timely manner”
