April 27, 2023
New York State Sen. Joseph Griffo, R-C-Rome, recently facilitated a meeting in Albany between school superintendents from the 53rd Senate District and the New York State Education Department.
More than 20 superintendents from Oneida, Herkimer, Madison and Chenango Counties attended the meeting, which provided the school officials with an important opportunity to discuss a variety of issues and concerns directly with Commissioner of Education Betty Rosa and senior department officials. Assemblyman Brian Miller, R-C-New Hartford, and Assemblywoman Marianne Buttenschon, D-Marcy, were also in attendance.
Topics discussed included methods to address teacher shortages, Annual Professional Performance Reviews (APPR) and consolidation.
“Open and direct communication between the New York State Education Department and local schools is essential, which is why I was pleased to have arranged this meeting for superintendents from many of the districts I represent in the Senate,” Sen. Griffo said. “I appreciate Commissioner Rosa and her staff taking the time to meet with these education leaders and the department’s willingness to discuss a number of issues with them.”
