ALBANY, NY - On the first day of the 2023 Legislative Session, Senator Lea Webb (SD-52) announced her Senate committee assignments, which include areas of longtime focus in her advocacy and government work. The freshman Senator has been appointed as the Chair of the Senate Women’s Issues Committee and will serve on the Committees of Agriculture, Cities 2, Health, Higher Education, Mental Health, and Procurement & Contracts. Senator Webb was sworn in today as part of a historic incoming Democratic class of senators made up entirely of women for the first time in the 245-year history of the New York Senate. An in-district swearing-in ceremony is scheduled for Saturday, January 7, 2023, at 12PM at Senator Webb’s alma mater Binghamton High School.
“I am honored to accept the position as Chair of the Women’s Issues Committee. Women suffered a devastating blow to our bodily autonomy with the fall of Roe and it is critical that New York stands strong as a sanctuary for reproductive care,” said Senator Webb. “It is important that we enact strong protections for access to abortion care and maternal health and secure the final passage of the Equal Rights Amendment to the NY State Constitution.”
Continued Webb, “My committee assignments reflect some of my legislative priorities and address significant issues important to residents across the 52nd district, which includes Cortland County, Tompkins County, and part of Broome County. In looking ahead to the 2023 session, my priority is ensuring equitable funding for our region in the state budget. After more than two years of the pandemic, our communities are hurting. It is critical that the state budget lifts folks out of poverty, strengthens families, and addresses the needs of underserved communities who have so often been denied a seat at the table. We must center the needs of working families by increasing funding to our childcare sector, raising the wages of home health workers, and supporting our community colleges and universities. I will also fight to protect our natural resources and ensure a just and equitable transition to a green economy.”
