ALBANY, NY
Today, the Supreme Court issued a decision extending the stay on the temporary block of the 5th Circuit’s decision restricting access to the abortion medication mifepristone through midnight on Friday. The fight is not over, but for today, this safe and effective FDA-approved medication, which has been in use for over 20 years, will remain available to the women who need it. After last year’s decision in Dobbs v. Jackson, we expected to face continued attacks against abortion rights. Since then, 13 states have instituted complete or partial bans on abortion. These draconian laws have undermined women’s bodily autonomy and our human right to make choices about our reproductive health. We will not stop fighting. As the Chair of the NYS Senate’s Women’s Issues Committee, I am committed to passing legislation that makes it clear that we intend to remain a sanctuary state for reproductive freedom. We will continue our work to increase access to abortion and every aspect of reproductive healthcare here in New York. We will not flinch in the face of these continued attacks.
