In commemoration of his actions, his career and his bravery, today I had the honor of meeting and delivering a Proclamation to Sergeant Aquilino Gonell. Sergeant Gonell, while a member of the Federal Capitol Police, put his life on the line to defend the people inside the Capitol during the attacks on January 6, 2021. For his heroic and courageous acts, Sergeant Gonell received the Presidential and Congressional Gold Medal from President Joe Biden.
Any recognition of this public servant's lifetime of service and sacrifice would pale in comparison to his determination and courage. As a young boy, Sergeant Aquilino Gonell came to New York at the age of 12 and since then has done everything possible to serve this country honorably. A veteran of our Armed Forces, he served with honor like so many other emigrants who have come to our nation. He is an example of effort and dedication in the fight for our country, often putting his own life at risk to serve. As a Latino in the New York State Senate, I am honored to be able to express my gratitude to a public servant who fills us with pride.
