Joint Statement from U.S. Rep. Grace Meng, Council Member Shekar Krishnan, Senators Michael Gianaris and Jessica Ramos, State Assembly Members Steven Raga and Jessica Gonzalez-Rojas
March 6, 2023
We express our deep sadness and concern over the brutal attack on Cecille Martinez Lai and her son, both residents of Elmhurst, near the Junction Boulevard 7-Train Station this past Thursday afternoon. The incident involved the use of explicit anti-Asian slurs and physical violence, which is utterly reprehensible. We condemn this heinous act of xenophobia and violence.
We stand in solidarity with Cecille and her family during this difficult time. Within our role as elected officials, we remain firmly committed to combating hate and bigotry in all its forms and ensuring that everyone in our community is treated with respect, dignity, and kindness. We are in close communication with Cecille and her family, the hospital, community organizations, and the 115th NYPD Precinct and await further updates.
