NEW YORK – Senate Deputy Leader Michael Gianaris issued this statement regarding the Republican lawsuit against his newly-enacted Early Vote by Mail law.
“Unsurprisingly, this new law is being opposed by the usual suspects: Trump loyalists and insurrection apologists,” said Senate Deputy Leader Michael Gianaris. “Their disdain for our democracy is well-established but we will not cede this critical ground to them as we continue to make it easier for people to vote and participate in choosing their government.”
Earlier today, Governor Kathy Hochul signed Senator Gianaris’ Early Vote by Mail legislation into law, giving all eligible New Yorkers the option of Early Voting by mail. The State Constitution explicitly grants the legislature the power to prescribe acceptable methods of voting, which this law does by authorizing voting by mail during the Early Voting period. Similar proposals have been enacted and survived legal challenges in Massachusetts and Pennsylvania.
