Hinchey Opposes NYC DEP Water Rate Raise for Hudson Valley
June 7, 2023
ALBANY, NY – Senator Michelle Hinchey today released the following statement in response to the NYC Water Board’s proposed 6.76% rate increase in the price of pretreated raw water sold to Upstate municipalities for reservoirs in the region:
“New York City has relied on Upstate communities for their drinking water since the start of the 20th century, which has saved the City billions of dollars because of the pristine stewardship and costly maintenance that our watershed communities and farmers have undertaken to ensure clean water. Upstate is not just a partner in this vital process; we are the custodians of the NYC watershed, and subjecting our communities to a price increase, which outpaces that of NYC’s customers and ignores this historic period of inflation, can only be described as unjust and inequitable. I will continue to champion our natural resources for all New Yorkers while also fighting to protect our residents' pockets from this unfair and unacceptable rate increase.”
