HAUPPAUGE, NY, August 3, 2023– The Suffolk County Land Bank has been awarded a $360,000 grant from the State’s Land Bank Initiative, Senator Monica R. Martinez announced today, which will help eliminate blight, increase housing supply, and improve the state of disinvested communities in the county.
The award was part of $26 million in grant funding awarded to 24 land banks across New York State. Land banks received the grants through a competitive Request for Applications process issued by New York State Homes and Community Renewal.
“This a great start toward improving the land, real estate, and the quality of life in neglected parts of Suffolk County,” said Senator Monica R. Martinez. “I applaud the State’s Land Bank Initiative and their efforts to repair the fabric of the neighborhoods that truly need it.”
Established in 2012, the state’s land banks stemmed from the New York State Land Bank Act. Land banks are local public authorities designed to facilitate the redevelopment of blighted and abandoned properties and return them to productive use. There are 26 land banks in New York State.
New York State Homes and Community Renewal will announce another Request for Applications in late fall 2023.
