Senator Patrick M. Gallivan (R-C, Elma) is co-sponsoring legislation (S.7730) aimed at helping police and fire departments across the state through a special grant program. The Public Safety Investment Act would provide $300 million in state grants to help with recruitment and retention efforts and equipment purchases.
The lack of grant opportunities puts a greater financial burden on municipal budgets and local taxpayers.
"When meeting with fire departments throughout the district, virtually all of them say they are struggling to recruit and retain members,” Senator Gallivan said. "Many police departments are also having financial difficulty purchasing and updating equipment. Providing grants to local police and fire departments will help ensure our first responders have the resources necessary to protect our communities and keep residents safe without putting a greater burden on local taxpayers.”
The legislation would make it possible for eligible police and fire departments to apply for a share of the state funding, which would be distributed over a three-year period. Each year, up to $100 million would be available to departments throughout New York.
The legislation will be considered by the Senate and Assembly when lawmakers return to session in January.
