Senator Rob Rolison's Co-sponsored Melanie's Law Unanimously Passes Senate
June 8, 2023
State Senator Rob Rolison (39th District) released a statement today following the upper chamber's unanimous passage of S.6288, also known as Melanie's Law. Named for homicide victim and Dutchess County resident Melanie Chianese, Rolison re-introduced the public safety legislation earlier this year; former Senator Sue Serino was the bill's original sponsor. The version of Melanie's Law which passed the Senate today was co-sponsored by Rolison and sponsored by Senator Michelle Hinchey, a Democrat. The legislation now awaits passage in the state Assembly, where it also enjoys bipartisan support.
"Today's Senate passage of Melanie's Law is a testament to bipartisanship and what happens when lawmakers work together to get things done. Public safety should be a top priority for government. This is a victory for Melanie's family, especially her mother Cheryl and her young son, and all victims of domestic abuse. I am proud to have co-sponsored this critical bill to address a major loophole in current criminal procedure law that will protect more family members and loved ones from violence," said Sen. Rolison.
