SENATOR SEAN RYAN HONORS PARKINSON’S BOXING AS JUNE ‘SMALL BUSINESS OF THE MONTH’
Nomination Window for July Award Open Until July 23
KENMORE, N.Y. – Today, June 30, 2023, New York State Senator Sean Ryan announced that Parkinson’s Boxing has been selected as the 61st Senate District Small Business of the Month for June. Senator Ryan will present the business with a New York State Senate Empire Award in recognition of its work helping people struggling with symptoms caused by neurodegenerative diseases and other ailments.
Parkinson’s Boxing works with hundreds of people each week who experience symptoms resulting from ailments including Parkinson’s disease, multiple sclerosis, and traumatic brain injuries. A staff of 27 coaches leads 1-on-1 sessions designed to restore mobility and relieve symptoms that diminish balance and otherwise affect body movement. A 2021 Northwestern University study found that Parkinson’s Boxing clients suffered 87% fewer falls per month while participating in boxing therapy.
The first Parkinson’s Boxing location was established in Kenmore in 2016. The gym has since expanded to include a second location in Hamburg. It is the only insurance-backed program of its kind in the United States.
Senator Sean Ryan said, “Parkinson’s Boxing offers an admirable and important service to our community. This award is a token of appreciation for the coaches that have decided to use their skills and experience to help hundreds of Western New Yorkers lessen the symptoms of Parkinson’s and other mobility-limiting diseases each year.”
Senator Ryan will continue to highlight businesses that deserve special recognition for their contributions to the Western New York community throughout 2023. To nominate a business for the July award, individuals should fill out the nomination form here or at ryan.nysenate.gov by Sunday, July 23.
Businesses that will receive special consideration during the selection process include:
