Gov. Hochul Signs Clean Slate Bill, November 16, 2023
The Clean Slate legislation signed today makes good on the promise of a second chance for those who have served their time and paid their debts. It allows people to stabilize themselves with gainful employment, housing and education-- which in turn will strengthen their families and communities. It reduces recidivism by offering those with conviction histories a pathway out of the cycle of crime. It grows our economy by expanding our workforce. It addresses the racial disparities that have long plagued our criminal legal system.
Most of all, Clean Slate shows that we see the inherent value in every New Yorker who is more than the worst thing they've ever done. When a person has served their sentence, remained out of legal trouble for years, has no pending charges or convictions, and wants a chance to support themselves and their loved ones-- we should eagerly offer them that chance. I am honored to have led the fight for Clean Slate alongside my colleagues in government, and the broadest coalition ever assembled. I'm so proud to serve in a state that recognizes the power, promise and potential of every single New Yorker.
