Senator Dan Stec (R,C-Queensbury), Assemblyman Scott Gray (R-Watertown) and Assemblyman Ken Blankenbush (R,C-Black River) have written to Governor Kathy Hochul, urging her to issue an Executive Order that would repeal portions of the state’s Green Light Law for counties along the northern border. Specifically, the state legislators are asking for her to lift that law’s ban on allowing local law enforcement to coordinate with federal immigration authorities on illegal immigration issues. While the lawmakers sponsor a bill to restore co-operation between all levels of law enforcement, the urgency of this situation requires the Executive power.
“Report after report has shown a massive influx of illegal migrant crossings in our border. Because of this, emergency services and residents are overwhelmed,” said Stec. Our legislation granting cooperation between local and state law enforcement and federal immigration authorities would provide immediate support in addressing illegal border crossings and improve security in our communities.
“While I urge my colleagues in the Legislature to take up this common-sense measure, working to resolve this crisis cannot wait. That’s why we’re urging the governor to use her emergency Executive powers to lift this ban. Given the seriousness and intensity of the illegal immigrant situation along our northern border, immediate action is needed,” he concluded.
