Stec Joins Senate, Assembly GOP Colleagues at Press Conference Announcing Migrant Bill

Senator Dan Stec (R,C-Queensbury) joined his Senate and Assembly Republican colleagues today at a press conference to address the public safety issues created by the ongoing migrant crisis. Stec is co-sponsoring Senate bill S.8533, which would require local and state law enforcement and certain courts to notify ICE of the arrest or conviction of non-citizens. It would also reinstate the maximum sentence for 365-day maximum sentence for a Class A misdemeanor and would repeal the “Protect our Courts Act” of 2020, which discourages enforcement of federal immigration laws.

“The migrant crisis has caused chaos across our state,” said Stec. “If the governor and Democrat leaders won’t take action to address the criminal behavior we’ve seen due to the surge in illegal immigrants pouring into New York, we must empower law enforcement to act.

“I’m proud to co-sponsor legislation that would require local police to notify federal immigration authorities when a migrant has been arrested or convicted of a crime. It’s just common sense: if you commit a crime and are here illegally, federal authorities must be alerted and immigration laws must be enforced,” he continued.
