(Brooklyn, NY) Senator Iwen Chu hosted her 2nd Annual Lunar New Year celebration event with over 500 southern Brooklyn residents joining her to commemorate the Year of the Dragon.
The celebration was supported by over 20 local community organizations. The Year of the Dragon symbolizes strength, prosperity, good fortune, wisdom, and power. Attendees enjoyed musical performances by Homecrest Community Services, PS 105 5th grade students, Xin Dance Studio, United Chinese Association of Brooklyn and more! U.S. Senator Chuck Schumer, NYC Public Advocate Jumaane Williams, and District Leader Nancy Tong and representatives from Attorney General Tish James & Brooklyn District Attorney attended the celebration and gave brief remarks.
“Lunar New Year is the most important celebration in the Asian community, and is a time blessed with good luck and new beginnings. The dragon symbolizes power and strength, and it’s a great time to remember the strength and diverse contributions that the AAPI community has brought,” said NYS Senator Iwen Chu. “It is my honor as the first Asian American woman elected to the State legislature in Brooklyn to expand the celebrations in southern Brooklyn. I’m thrilled to see southern Brooklyn residents of all ages come together to ring in the new year!”
As this event came to an end, southern Brooklyn is wrapping up its month long Lunar New Year celebrations. Prior to this grand finale, Senator Chu also co-sponsored Lunar New Year celebrations with Chinese-American Council Planning, Federation of Italian American Organizations, Parent-Child Relationship Association.
