22 State Lawmakers Urge Adams to Sign Broker Fee Ban

NEW YORK, NY — On Tuesday, November 26th, twenty-two state lawmakers from New York City sent a joint letter to Mayor Eric Adams urging him to immediately sign Fairness in Apartment Rentals Expenses Act (FARE Act) – a bill that would prevent landlords from forcing new tenants to pay for brokers that were hired by the landlord. The bill passed the New York City council on Wednesday, November 13th – nearly two weeks ago – but has not been signed by Mayor Adams.  

“The FARE Act is part of a years-long fight to stop the real estate industry from bleeding tenants dry with unreasonable fees. We know from experience that REBNY will do everything they can to stop the ban, so we have to keep up this fight,” said Sen. Jabari Brisport, State Senate sponsor of the state-wide Broker Fee Ban bill (S.2783).

“The housing affordability crisis is pushing New Yorkers out of the city they call home. It’s far past time for Mayor Adams to sign into law what nearly every other major American city unanimously agrees with—that those who hire the broker should pay the fees,” said AM Zohran Mamdani, Assembly sponsor of the state-wide Broker Fee Ban.
