State Senator Joseph P. Addabbo, Jr.  and Assemblywoman Jenifer Rajkumar hosted a free electronic waste recycling event on October 6th at the Forest Park Bandshell Parking Lot where their partners the Lower East Side Ecology Center collected old and broken electronics to be properly recycled. GCOP was on hand to direct traffic.

There was a consistent line of cars dropping off e-waste throughout the four-hour event. Some constituents even arrived an hour early to get rid of their old electronic clutter. Lower East Side Ecology Center stacked palettes with towering amounts of televisions, stereos, computers, fax machines, telephones and many other types of electronics. There were 248 drop-offs by constituents totaling approximately 14,000 pounds of e-waste.

"Properly disposing of electronic waste is not just an environmental necessity; it's a moral obligation,” Addabbo said.  “As elected officials, we must lead by example in protecting our planet and ensuring a sustainable future for generations to come. Together, we can create a cleaner, greener community by promoting responsible e-waste recycling and raising awareness about its importance."

“The electronic waste recycling events I host with Senator Addabbo have become a beloved semi-annual tradition in South Queens,” Assemblywoman Rajkumar said. “The event allows our neighbors to clear their homes of broken or unwanted electronics, diverting some of the 7 million tons of e-waste the US produces each year. Electronics recycling lowers our carbon emissions, cleans our water and soil, and recovers rare precious metals. It is a joy each time to see our whole community come together to protect our Earth and foster a healthy and sustainable future for our children.”
