BROOKLYN, Ny - In a heartfelt tribute to a trailblazer in the fight for civil rights, New York State Senator Kevin Parker attended the annual Ruby Bridges Walk to School Day in Brooklyn at P.S. 198. The event commemorates the historic walk of Ruby Bridges, the First African-American child to integrate an all-white elementary school in the South.
Senator Parker walked alongside local students, educators, and community members to honor Ms. Bridges' courage and resilience - a poignant reminder that the road toward equity requires commitment and sacrifice. He presented Ms. Bridges with a proclamation from the New York State Senate recognizing her pivotal role in the desegregation of America's school systems and her continued advocacy for children's rights and educational equity.
Senator Parker said, "Ruby Bridges' bravery in the face of overwhelming adversity changed the course of history, and her legacy continues to inspire generations of young people to stand up for what's right. Her story is a reminder that progress in the fight for equality requires both courage and compassion, and it's an honor to celebrate her bravery with the community today."
The Senator also emphasized the importance of continuing to foster diversity and inclusion in schools across the nation, encouraging students to uphold these essential values.
The Ruby Bridges Walk to School Day is an annual event celebrated in cities across the United States. The initiative aims to promote social justice and inclusion while inspiring young people to understand and appreciate the sacrifices made by those who came before them.
