Backpack Fillers
August 16, 2024
Students from across Long Island will be heading back to the classroom within the next few weeks, and more than 1,500 children will return with new backpacks full of supplies thanks to a back-to-school Backpack & Supply Distribution event hosted on Saturday by New York State Sen. Monica R. Martinez and Liga de Justicia Abogados.
The event was intended to ensure every child in the Fourth Senatorial District has the tools needed for success as they prepare for the upcoming school year. In addition to backpacks and essential school supplies, students who attended were also able to receive free barber services, hair clips, food, and take part in other fun activities, including face painting.
“This annual event is all about supporting our young people and ensuring every child has what they need for a successful school year,” Sen. Martinez said. “By partnering with Liga de Justicia Abogados and other local organizations and businesses committed to the Brentwood community, we’re able to prevent financial hardship from hindering educational achievement. No child should ever be held back due to a lack of resources, and this event helps guarantee that won’t happen.”
Sen. Martinez will host another school supply giveaway before the end of summer break on Sunday, Aug. 25, from noon to 2 p.m. at Herman Griem Park in Wheatley Heights.
