BROOKLYN – NY. On Thursday, June 13, 2024, Senator Roxanne J. Persaud and the FDNY hosted a Fire Safety Presentation via Zoom and streamed on Facebook. The safety demonstration was conducted by Captain Gerald Rocco of the FDNY Safety Education Unit. The presentation began with Captain Rocco covering the number of fatalities that happened this year and how they could have been prevented.
The presentation went on to demonstrate the causes of possible hazards that included overloaded power strips, improperly placed space heaters, cooking grease fires, unattended cigarettes, and more. While safety tools included smoke / carbon monoxide alarms, fire extinguishers, LED candles instead of traditional ones, and baking soda for grease fires.
Captain Rocco recommended mounting the fire extinguisher to a wall where it is easily visible and accessible and used the acronym P.A.S.S, which stands for Pull, Aim, Squeeze, and Sweep. After the presentation, Captain Rocco and Senator Persaud discussed the importance of the community arming themselves with the knowledge to avoid injury and death, especially with the abundance of fire incidents around the district recently.
“I want to remind you of the seriousness of having your homes protected, smoke detectors save lives,” said Senator Persaud
