(Montrose, New York) - Constituents of State Senate District 37 came together to make February brighter for residents of the NYS Veterans Home at Montrose by participating in Senator Shelley Mayer’s “Valentines for Veterans” card drive.
Members of the community joined Senator Mayer’s staff on Wednesday, February 7, at Yonkers’ Grinton I. Will Library to create custom-made Valentine cards. Others brought their cards to one of four drop-off locations in District 37: the Town of Mamaroneck Town Hall, the Pound Ridge Town House, the aforementioned Will Library, and Senator Mayer’s District Office in White Plains.
Senator Mayer visited the Veterans Home on Friday, February 16 to deliver the Valentines — along with some delicious cupcakes — and to meet and talk with the residents. Mayer personally knew several of the residents at Montrose who had been active residents of the City of Yonkers, where she lives.
Senator Shelley Mayer said, “Everyone who has answered the call to defend and protect our country deserves our gratitude and our attention. It is very important to me to stay connected to the veterans in our district so I can learn about their concerns and needs and hear their words of wisdom. This Valentine drive is a great and fun way to let our veterans know that they have the love and support of the entire community. It was an honor to go to the NYS Veterans Home at Montrose and personally send my gratitude and appreciation to the veterans who are residents there.”
New York State Health Commissioner Dr. James McDonald said, “As a Navy veteran, I am delighted to see the community remember our veterans with homemade Valentines and I thank Senator Mayer for arranging this thoughtful tribute, and providing sweet treats for the residents.”
