Albany, NY - State Senator John Liu, Chair of the Senate Committee on NYC Education, and sponsor of S9460 to reduce class sizes in NYC, stated the following about NYC Public Schools’ plan to hire 3,700 new teachers.

“NYC Public Schools’ plan to hire thousands of new teachers is a welcome and significant step toward finally reducing NYC’s overcrowded classrooms. This investment represents real, tangible progress toward delivering the sound, basic education to which students are constitutionally entitled, and for which Foundation Aid is intended to support.

“For too long, NYC students have endured overcrowded classrooms that hinder learning, engagement, and potential. It’s good to see the administration is beginning to use the historic increase in Foundation Aid to do what it is meant to do: provide students with a sound, basic education.

“There is still more work to do to meet the full requirements of the class size law in the coming years, but today’s announcement is an encouraging sign that the city is finally taking real steps toward complying with state law and using the tools and funding provided by the state to make a lasting difference in the future of NYC Public Schools. NYC remains the only place in the State of New York with excessively large class sizes, and NYC Public Schools must stay the course and continue working collaboratively with schools, families and communities to fulfill this commitment, particularly with regard to capital construction in the coming years.”
