SENATOR WALCZYK APPOINTED RANKING MEMBER OF ELECTIONS COMMITTEE
January 10, 2025
Senator Walczyk has been appointed as the Ranking Member of the Elections Committee, a position he held during his first year in the Senate in 2023. This important role will enable him to continue shaping policies related to electoral integrity, voter access, and initiatives affecting the electoral process here in New York. "I am honored to serve in this leadership role for the second time; every New Yorker deserves the right to be heard in our elections," said Senator Walczyk. "Participating in elections is a fundamental right and a cherished privilege that we, as Americans, are empowered to uphold."
The role of the Ranking Member is to provide a counterbalance to unfavorable proposals originating from the majority party. In 2023, Senator Walczyk earned a reputation for debating every Democratic elections bill brought to the floor, arguing that Albany Democrats had become so unpopular that they resorted to attempting to change electoral rules to consolidate power away from the voting public. He made significant strides that year by sponsoring legislation that mandates voter identification and allows individuals to register to vote when applying for fishing and hunting licenses. Additionally, he advocated for legislation that grants local Boards of Elections greater flexibility in determining the locations of early voting stations.
"Senator Walczyk is exceptionally qualified to serve on the Elections Committee, thanks to his proven track record in this role," said Theresa Robotham, Commissioner of the Herkimer County Board of Elections. "He consistently seeks feedback on legislation, which is a welcome change in today's political landscape that often prioritizes policy over people."
"I’m excited that Senator Walczyk is returning to Albany to represent us once more. He is truly dedicated to serving the people," said Tiffany Ladd, Commissioner of the Jefferson County Board of Elections. "I take great pride in his efforts and look forward to all he will achieve for us, particularly in his role as Ranking Member of the Elections Committee."
Ensuring that the rural communities, which form a significant part of the 49th Senate District, are heard is essential to maintaining our Republic. Fair and equitable elections are the foundation of New York. Senator Walczyk is prepared to resume his efforts on behalf of this great state. First up is the upcoming battle in Albany, set to take place early next week, where Democrats are expected to introduce a series of problematic election bills. Senator Walczyk will also be serving on additional committees this session, with those assignments to be announced soon.
