STATEMENT FROM SENATOR CANZONERI-FITZPATRICK
“Today marks the beginning of the Governor’s congestion pricing commuter tax, a policy that disproportionately burdens hardworking Nassau County residents. We’ve long known that Governor Hochul’s decision to delay this deeply unpopular tax until after the election was politically motivated, and now we have confirmation. Implementing this ill-conceived plan immediately after the election reveals the Governor’s focus on political optics over the genuine needs of the people she serves.
Families who rely on their cars for work and daily life will feel the immediate strain of this tax. The domino effect—higher costs for goods, services, and transportation—will deepen the affordability crisis in New York.
Unfortunately, this suburban bailout of the MTA ignores the actual problems with MTA—its persistent mismanagement. Penalizing drivers won’t solve the agency’s wasteful spending or unchecked toll evasion. Instead, it will push more families and businesses out of New York, worsening the affordability crisis.
New Yorkers deserve transportation policies that solve problems, not schemes crafted for political gain. We’re committed to fighting for Nassau County residents and others who are being unfairly taxed to make up for Albany’s chronic failures.”
