Senator Patrick M. Gallivan, (R-C, Elma) has sponsored a resolution in the State Senate memorializing Governor Hochul to proclaim February 8, 2025, as Snowmobile Ride Day in New York State. The date corresponds with the observance of International Snowmobile Ride Day.
The designation celebrates winter weather and the adventure that snowmobiling provides. According to the Office of Parks, Recreation, and Historic Preservation, there are over 10,500 miles in the Statewide Snowmobile Trail System. The trails traverse forty-five counties and are maintained by over 220 clubs, including those that make up the Erie County Federation of Snowmobile Clubs.
“New York State residents and tourists alike embrace our winter weather and enjoy the thousands of miles of snowmobile trails available across New York, especially in the Upstate region,” said Senator Gallivan. “This resolution is intended to encourage more people to participate in snowmobiling which in turn supports local businesses, boosts our economy and promotes the natural beauty of New York State.”
The state’s snowmobile trail network is comprised of lands under the jurisdiction of OPRHP, the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC), NYS Canal Corporation, the United States Forest Service, and local governments. Many private landowners open their property to snowmobiling with insurance coverage provided by the state snowmobile program.
The Senate resolution was adopted earlier this month.
