Statement From Senate Republican Leader Rob Ortt On On Governor Hochul Deploying National Guard to Prisons Amidst Strikes
February 18, 2025

Sending the National Guard into our subways to do the job of the NYPD, and prisons to do the job of our correction officers is not the best use of these brave New Yorkers and is the result of the failed leadership of Governor Hochul and Senate and Assembly Democrats.
The Governor should be focused on getting our correction officers back in prisons by ending HALT, and a commitment to increasing staffing.
Deploying our National Guard makes this situation even more dangerous. As a former member of the New York National Guard, I have the highest regard for these soldiers. However this is not what they are trained for.
