FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: February 20th, 2025
Brooklyn, NY — Senator Stephen T. Chan of Senate District 17 announced that the application period is now open for the John D. Solomon Fellowship for Public Service, New York City’s premier graduate student fellowship dedicated to emergency management.
Now in its 14th year, the fellowship selects 10 outstanding graduate students for a nine-month placement across various New York City agencies and the American Red Cross in Greater New York. Fellows gain hands-on experience in emergency preparedness and public service while receiving a $10,000 stipend. Applications will be accepted through March 16, 2025.
Fellows dedicate 15-20 hours per week to their assigned agencies, contributing to projects that enhance the city’s emergency management capabilities. Participants also engage in professional development and networking opportunities at City Hall, the United Nations, and beyond.
The late John D. Solomon, a respected journalist and active member of New York City’s Community Emergency Response Team (NYC CERT), founded the fellowship to foster a culture of preparedness and resilience. Since its inception, over 105 fellows have participated, with more than 42% continuing their careers in New York City or State government.
HOW TO APPLY
Graduate students in the New York City metropolitan area interested in public service and emergency management are encouraged to apply before the March 16, 2025, deadline.
