Senator Mario R. Mattera was first elected to represent New York State’s 2nd Senate District in November 2020 and sworn into office on January 5, 2021. He successfully won reelection in both 2022 and 2024, continuing to serve the residents of Huntington and Smithtown.

Having lived and worked in the 2nd Senate District his entire life, Senator Mattera deeply understands the needs of local families and the challenges posed by Albany’s tax burdens. His decades of leadership in Plumbers Local Union #200 have given him a clear perspective on how a strong economic climate supports local businesses, creates jobs, and provides workers with fair pay and benefits. As a husband and father, he also recognizes the critical importance of quality education in building a prosperous future for all.

Commitment to Labor and Workforce Development

With over 43 years as a member and leader of Plumbers Local Union #200, Senator Mattera has been a staunch advocate for Long Island’s workforce. He has managed over $250 million in benefit funds, ensuring secure futures for the union’s 1,300 members. His leadership has helped create good-paying jobs, safe work environments, robust benefits, and retirement plans.

A champion for the next generation, Senator Mattera has served 25 years as a board member of the apprenticeship program at Plumbers Local Union #200, opening doors for young workers and strengthening the region’s skilled workforce. His contributions to labor have earned him numerous accolades, including the Order Sons of Italy in America’s Golden Lion Award as 2019’s Labor Leader of the Year and the PBA Columbia’s 2012 Labor Leader of the Year.

Dedication to Community Service

Senator Mattera has long been committed to improving the quality of life for his fellow Long Islanders. His volunteer work includes serving on the St. Catherine’s Health and Wellness Advisory Board, the Suffolk County Water Authority, the Community Association of Greater St. James, and the Smithtown Advisory Board for new construction projects.

His efforts have been instrumental in securing millions in state funding for sewer infrastructure in Smithtown, Kings Park, and St. James business districts. This critical initiative will protect the environment, enhance local business opportunities, and create jobs. Additionally, he has been recognized for his contributions by organizations such as the Paige Keely Foundation, Celebrate St. James, the Children’s Museum at Hallock Farm, St. Catherine of Siena Medical Center, and the Ward Melville Heritage Organization.

Advocacy for Housing and Veterans

Senator Mattera has worked with the Workforce Housing Committee, Helmets to Hardhats (which supports veterans transitioning into civilian careers), and the Long Island Housing Partnership. He played a key role in the Superstorm Sandy relief program, helping Long Islanders rebuild during challenging times.
