State Senator Marisol Alcantara is a longtime labor organizer, community organizer, and activist who has devoted her life to empowering low income communities, women, workers, and immigrant New Yorkers. Since coming to the United States at the age of 12, she has seen firsthand the problems facing New York City and State, from underfunded schools and public services, to insufficient protections for workers and immigrants, to a healthcare system that leaves many behind.
Marisol believes that every child and family should have equitable access to a high quality public education, affordable housing, and quality healthcare. In Marisol’s 20 years of experience, she has been a fierce advocate for labor and working communities. In Albany, Marisol will fight both for the robust social safety net that people in the 31st State Senate district deserve and for an end to the system of patronage and corruption that skews policy in favor of monied interests.
Marisol is a graduate from Manhattan College, where she earned an B.A. in Government and Politics. Next, she earned a Masters in Labor Relations from the CUNY Murphy Institute of Labor. She then went on to be a Coro fellow, which allowed her to work at the New York Immigration Coalition and become a Graduate of the New Americans Leadership Institute. Afterwards, Marisol began her career in labor as a union organizer for SEIU 32BJ in New Jersey for 8 years and helped coordinate SEIU’s Latino outreach efforts in the 2008 presidential election. Immediately before being elected as the New York State Senate’s only Latina member in 2016, she was working as a labor organizer for the New York State Nurses Association, advocating for patient-centered reforms such as safe staffing and expanded access to care.
Marisol Alcantara is proud to serve the people of the 31st State Senate District in Albany and will bring her lifetime of advocacy and service to every issue she encounters.
