Senator Shirley L. Huntley represents the 10th Senatorial District in Queens County. Having spent most of her life in the district she now represents, Senator Huntley knows very well the nature of her diverse communities, and welcomes the opportunity to serve her district.

Shirley L. Huntley presently resides in Jamaica, New York with her husband Herbert Huntley. Senator Huntley is a very proud mother and grandmother. She has served as an effective parent activist, and is a community leader. Her commitment has and will always be to provide the best education for her own children, as well as for all children. Her passionate concern for the welfare of the students has resulted in her becoming involved in the public school system, and her participation in many other community projects and community based organizations.

Prior to becoming Senator, Shirley L. Huntley was elected to Queens Community School Board #28 in 1993, with an overwhelming number of votes. In 1996, she was re-elected for a second term, and then she was elected as president of Community School Board #28, until its dissolution in 2004. In June 2004, Senator Huntley was appointed by the honorable Queens Borough President Helen Marshall to the Community Education Council for District #28. In July of 2004, Shirley L. Huntley was recognized for her dedication and commitment when elected to serve as President on the Community Education Council for District #28. Senator Huntley pledges that she will always fight   for the welfare of children, work to keep improving the Public school system for the future of our children’s success, and to defend mental health issues by supporting needed programs for the well being of one’s mental health.

Over the years, Senator Shirley L. Huntley has been recognized for her outstanding services to fight for the rights of children and parents in District 28. Her persistent ability and determination has enabled her to make educational changes in her community. It is her strong belief that formal and informal education is vitally important to the future success of this city and its children. She continues to advocate for the school system to provide students with a formal education of historical, cultural, and current events. Senator Huntley supports programs that encourage civic awareness, stewardship, and volunteerism, and promotes the development of our youth with implementation of current technology. She also advocated for extended Public library services. Senator Huntley’s hope is that all students will be afforded an education that gives them the opportunity to acquire the skills that will bring forth worthy and successful scholars to lead, and to one day be the dynamic forces that can support the social and economic needs of our great state.

Senator Shirley L. Huntley was elected to office in 2007. Appointed to Co-Chair of the NYC School Governance Task Force, she held a forum were testimonies can be expressed by parents, educators, administrators, students, advocates, community organizations, and leaders regarding the issues our school system needs to address. Due to her efforts, when Mayoral Control was renewed in 2009 parents were assured that they would have increased involvement and participation in their child’s education. Subsequently, the active role she took of enhancing the quality of education received in her community, enabled her to be chosen as Co-Chair of Senate Select Committee on New York City School Governance.

Also in 2009, Senator Huntley became Chair of the Mental Health and Developmental Disabilities Committee and enacted many important laws.  She sponsored and passed 16 bills such as Timothy’s Law to provide increased medical treatment and coverage to those with a mental illness. The “Office of People with Developmental Disabilities” was a new name assigned to the department that cares for those with mental disabilities and was also passed into law.  Additionally, Senator Huntley passed the “Children’s Plan” and conducted a hearing regarding insurance coverage and the most effective treatment options for those who have Autism.  Many of the mental health initiatives and laws passed by Senator Huntley will have improved the lives of countless people who deserve to be treated fairly and equally.

In 2010 Senator Huntley was selected to become Chair of the Cities Committee.  As chair, she spoke with and listened to the concerns of City Mayors and local leaders around the state of New York regarding property taxes, unfunded mandates, and pension reform.  Senator Huntley stepped up her efforts by passing 22 bills in 2010 most notably, the “Hospital Closure Act”, teen suicide prevention, and training for physicians about eating disorders.
 
Throughout 2009 and 2010 Senator Huntley was intensely focused on improving the lives of everyone in her district. She hosted a wide range of events and programs such as Home Foreclosure Workshops.
