We will examine what the pandemic has taught us about the role of public schools in our everyday lives in Southeast Queens and what priorities really matter regarding public education in our community. If schools re-open in the Fall, what kind of education should the community of Southeast Queens demand?
Joining Senator Sanders for this conversation will be Randi Weingarten, President, American Federation of Teachers, AFL-CIO; and Dennis Walcott, President and CEO of Queens Public Library, both native New Yorkers.
Randi Weingarten has an impressive record of accomplishments during her 12 years as president of the United Federation of Teachers representing some 200,000 educators across the city, along with her diligent efforts for true education reform in her role as President of the AFT.
Dennis Walcott is a Queens native, educated in the public school system, and former school teacher who rose to become the Chancellor of the New York City Department of Education and is now the President of Queens Library, one of the nation's largest public library systems with 66 locations in the most diverse urban area in the world.
Also joining the panel will be Dr. Kimberly Young Wilkins, Deputy Commissioner P-12 Instructional Support at the New York State Education Department. Prior to her current role, Dr. Wilkins served as Assistant Commissioner for Innovation and School Reform where she oversaw the Department’s efforts to implement New York’s School Receivership program in schools identified as Struggling and Persistently Struggling, as well as selected grant programs intended to increase student results in low-performing schools.
As we prepare for our education event and strategize on how to help our schools, we are gathering information. You can help us by taking a few minutes to fill out our SEQ Parent Education Advocacy Survey. We want to hear from you.
