Palumbo Sworn In As 1st District’s New State Senator

Senator Anthony Palumbo (R,C-New Suffolk) was sworn in today as the 1^st District’s new State Senator. Palumbo succeeds longtime former Senator Ken LaValle in representing the East End of Long Island in the State Senate. 

“I am honored to represent the residents of the 1st State Senate District and look forward to getting to work and addressing the serious challenges facing our communities here on Long Island and throughout the state,” said Palumbo.  “My first priority is to provide our health care professionals and first responders with the tools and resources they need to combat the surge in COVID-19 here in Suffolk County.  Ensuring the health and safety of the community and our vulnerable populations must be at the forefront of every decision the Legislature makes as we convene the 2021 Session.”

Senator Palumbo, who previously served in the State Assembly for seven years before being elected to the State Senate, also spoke about the need to help struggling businesses, farmers and the area’s fishing and tourism industries and to rethink New York’s approach to helping these crucial job creators.

 “New York State needs to provide immediate and lasting relief to our small businesses, restaurants and mom-and-pop stores,” said Palumbo. “Helping these entrepreneurs now is the best way to ensure a quick and lasting recovery. Our state is facing serious budget shortfalls, and the best way to avoid an economic armageddon is to get our economy moving in the safest, smartest and fastest way possible.”

Lastly, Senator Palumbo, who previously served as an Assistant District Attorney, spoke about the urgent need to stop the radical policies that have emboldened criminals and made it harder and more dangerous for law enforcement to do their jobs. 

“COVID-19 and the crime wave caused by bad legislation like bail reform, made 2020 a year that most New Yorkers would like to soon forget,” said Palumbo.  “Sadly these disastrous policies are still on the books, with seemingly more pro-crime bills on the horizon.  We must repeal these laws and end the dangerous anti-police rhetoric in Albany. As a Senator, my job is to make our state as safes as possible and it is a task I am committed to and as the Republican Ranker on the Senate Codes Committee, I will take this issue very seriously.” 

Newly elected State Senator Palumbo is the Ranking Republican member on the State Senate’s Codes and Ethics Committees.
