Merrick Veteran Is Senator Fuschillo's Guest On Flight To Commemorate End Of Wwii

Senator Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr. (8th Senate District) recently joined with local veterans as they assembled to commemorate the signing of the surrender papers that ended World War II. The event, at the American Airpower Museum in Farmingdale, was capped with a reenactment of both the signing and the legendary "Times Square" kiss that celebrated the end of hostilities.

Senator Fuschillo also celebrated the event by inviting Commander Robert Tom Riordan, of the Nassau County American Legion, as his guest on a "victory" flight aboard vintage B-17 and B-24 planes. The memorial trip was arranged by the operators of the American Airpower Museum.

Commander Riordan boarded a B-24 Liberator bomber, one of over 12,000 built during the war, for his trip. These planes were used in Europe and the Pacific as part of the Allied Troops winning effort.

"The successful conclusion of World War II should be remembered as a time that allowed us to celebrate one of the greatest victories in our history. It also allows us to remember the courage, the valor and the spirit of those who assembled here today and to thank them for all they have given us," stated Senator Fuschillo. "To have the opportunity to have Commander Riordan participate and receive the accolades that all our veterans so greatly deserve makes the day even more special."

The event saw a local historian portraying General Douglas MacArthur as he oversaw the signing of surrender papers by representatives of Imperial Japan. This action signified the end of World War II and led to that historic kiss.
