Senator Fuschillo Awards Liberty Medal To Local Hero

Senator Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr. (8th Senate District), today presented Copiague resident George Miller, a member of the Amityville Fire Department, with the New York State Senate’s Liberty Award in honor of his heroic rescue of two individuals from a burning Lindenhurst home.

"Without hesitation or regard for his own safety, Mr. Miller ran into a burning home several times in order to save the lives of two individuals who were still trapped inside. As a result of his bravery, tragedy was averted and those people were saved," said Senator Fuschillo. "Mr. Miller’s actions truly exemplify the spirit that all of our firefighters possess, and make him most worthy of this award. I am certain that I speak for the entire community in saying that we are all very proud of this local hero."

While driving through Lindenhurst early on the morning of January 29, 2004, Mr. Miller heard a woman yelling for help. After pulling over, he rushed over to the woman, who told him that a nearby house was on fire and that two people were trapped inside on the second floor. He then ran into the burning home several times, trying to overcome the immense heat and smoke from the fire, in order to find the two individuals. He pulled the first victim out of the blaze, and with the assistance of a Suffolk County Police Officer who responded to the scene, retrieved the second person and brought her to safety.

Created in 2000, the New York State Senate Liberty Award is one of the highest civilian honors that a New Yorker can receive. The award is given to individuals who have merited special commendation for exceptional, heroic, or humanitarian acts and achievements on behalf of their fellow New Yorkers. This is only the eighth time that Senator Fuschillo has awarded an individual with this prestigious honor.
