Senator Fuschillo Honors Merrick Resident With New York State Senate "achievers' Award"

Senator Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr. (8th Senate District) recently honored David Stayer, a resident of Merrick, with a New York State Senate "Achievers’ Award" at the 25th Annual Disabilities Awareness Day Awards Ceremony in Albany. The program, organized by the New York State Senate, recognizes an individual’s ability to overcome personal, physical challenges and honors their accomplishments on behalf of themselves and their community.

"David Stayer has been a tireless advocate for the visually impaired for over thirty years, and continues to use his talents and energies to help improve the lives of others within our community," said Senator Fuschillo. "He serves as an inspiration to all, and I am proud to present him with this prestigious honor."

Mr. Stayer has been active in the National Federation of the Blind since 1973. He is a Past President of the New York State Affiliate and is currently First Vice President of the Human Services Division. He also chairs the National Federation of the Blind in Judaism and is President of the Greater Long Island Chapter of the Federation. In addition, Mr. Stayer served on the Governor’s State Rehabilitation Council for the Commission for the Blind and Visually Handicapped in New York, chairing the Council for two years.

Mr. Stayer holds a Masters Degree in social work, and was a social worker at the Nassau University Medical Center for 37 years. He also is President of the Freeport Community Chorale and Past President of the Bel Canto Chorale.

The New York State Senate "Achievers’ Award" is presented each spring in conjunction with Legislative Disabilities Awareness Day, an annual event sponsored by the Senate to raise public consciousness of the efforts and accomplishments of citizens with physical disabilities.
