Senator Fuschillo Reminds Nassau County Residents To Save On School Taxes Through Star Program

Charles J. Fuschillo Jr.

Senator Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr. (8th Senate District) is reminding all Nassau County residents to take advantage of valuable school property tax savings by signing up for New York State’s STAR program.

"New York State’s STAR program provides substantial savings on school property taxes, but there are still many homeowners who are not participating in this program," said Senator Fuschillo. "I urge anyone who is not already enrolled in this program to take advantage of the valuable tax savings to which they are entitled."

The STAR program works in two parts:

- Basic STAR is available to all New Yorkers who own and live in their own home, condominium, or cooperative apartment, regardless of income level or age.

- Enhanced STAR is available to senior citizen (aged 65 and older) property owners whose annual adjusted gross income level is under $67,850. If the property is owned by a husband and wife, or by siblings, only one of them must be at least 65 years old to qualify for this exemption.

Residents who already receive the Basic STAR exemption or who participate in the Enhanced STAR Income Verification Program do not need to refile.

Senator Fuschillo is also reminding homeowners that a STAR exemption is required in order to receive the newly created STAR local property tax rebate from New York State. This rebate will provide residents with hundreds of dollars in savings that will be in addition to STAR savings. Residents who receive a STAR exemption will automatically have their rebate check mailed to them this fall. Homeowners who did not apply for a STAR exemption may still be eligible for this rebate by filing an application with the New York State Department of Taxation and Finance between October 1, 2006 and January 20, 2007. Applications can be obtained by calling Senator Fuschillo’s office.

Applications for the Basic or Enhanced STAR program can be obtained by calling Senator Fuschillo’s office at 516-546-4100, and additional information on STAR program can be found by CLICKING HERE.
