Senator Fuschillo Serves As Chairman Of Walk Far For Naar
Senator Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr. (8th Senate District) was honored to serve as the Chairman of the annual Long Island Walk F.A.R. for N.A.A.R. (National Alliance for Autism Research) fundraising event at Jones Beach on October 2. The event, which is the premiere event for N.A.A.R., is the first and largest walk program for autism research in the United States.
N.A.A.R. is an organization that works to fund, promote and accelerate biomedical research and science-based approaches that seek to determine the causes, prevention, effective treatments and, ultimately, a cure for autism spectrum disorders. Since 2000, approximately 171,000 people have participated in over 65 collective events and the organization has raised over $18.3 million for autism research.
Autism is a complex developmental disability that typically appears during the first three years of life. The result of a neurological disorder that affects the functioning of the brain, autism impacts the normal development of the brain in the areas of social interaction and communication skills. Patients typically have difficulties interacting with others, communicating both verbally and non-verbally, and engaging in leisure or play activities.
"Autism occurs in approximately one in every 250 births and this walk not only raises funds to help the families but raises awareness of the disease as well," said Senator Fuschillo. "By bringing the families afflicted by this disease together, we show them that they are not alone and that the entire community is ready to work together to help."
Senator Fuschillo has been a staunch supporter of the fight against Autism. Previously, he authored the law creating a distinctive license plate to promote Autism awareness, sponsored legislation to create the infantile autism biomedical research act and has procured thousands of dollars in state grant funding to help fund autism research.
"Although great strides have been made in the fight against autism, much work remains. It was a privilege to serve as the honorary chairman of this event and I am proud to take part in such a special day," concluded Senator Fuschillo.
