Senator Fuschillo's Cpr Training Proposal To Be Featured On Wabc Tv Health Special

Charles J. Fuschillo Jr.

Senator Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr. (8th Senate District), a member of the Senate Health Committee, will be prominently featured on a WABC TV health special on Saturday, January 28. The special called, Operation 7: Save A Life, will air at 7:30 p.m. on channel 7.

The segment featuring Senator Fuschillo will involve his efforts to require cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) education for all secondary school students. Currently, all schools throughout New York State are permitted to teach this lifesaving skill but are not required to by law.

Legislation sponsored by Senator Fuschillo will amend the current law to ensure that all high school students are provided with the needed training to perform CPR as part the health curriculum. In addition, due to a change in the law, all schools who currently teach CPR will begin offering instruction on the safe operation of automated external defibrillators (AED) at the beginning of next year. Combining the proper administration of CPR and the safe utilization AEDs would prepare all New York high school students for most emergency situations.

"We should start teaching these life saving skills at a young age and high school is a great place to start. AEDs are becoming commonplace and all residents should know how to use these vital devices. This legislation would help us make sure that our students are well prepared in the event a situation arises," stated Senator Fuschillo.

Last July, Senator Fuschillo unveiled a new law requiring all health clubs throughout New York State with memberships of 500 or more to have at least one AED, which is approved by the federal Food and Drug Administration, on site and also requires at least one staff member on site during all business hours to be trained in its use and trained to perform CPR. In addition to health clubs, this law applies to health spas, health studios, gymnasiums, weight control studios, martial arts and self-defense schools.
