Brooklyn Officials Demand State Cfe Funds

In a scene echoed daily throughout the city, students from Sunset Park must travel one to two hours to neighboring schools in Bay Ridge and Coney Island, which are already bursting at the seams. Fort Hamilton High School, for example is at 180% capacity and Telecommunication Arts & Technology is at 130% capacity.

“An overcrowded school system affects everyone. We cannot expect to keep shuffling children around without expecting there to be consequences,” said Senator Savino.

As the State Legislature enters into this year’s budget negotiations, the three elected officials are vowing to fight for New York City’s fair share of education dollars.

“Choosing to ignore the problem will not make it go away. It will not add classrooms, art programs, gyms or libraries. It is time for Governor Pataki and the Senate Majority to show their commitment to New York City schoolchildren and provide the funds necessary to complete these desperately needed new schools,” said Senator Savino.
