Marcellino And Sweeney Pass Legislation To Extend Application Deadline For Star Property Tax Rebate Checks

Carl L Marcellino

The New York State Legislature today passed legislation (s.6485/A.9479) sponsored by Senator Carl L. Marcellino (R, Syosset) and Assemblyman Bob Sweeney (D,Lindenhurst) to extend the date to apply for the Middle Class STAR rebate program from November 30, 2007 to December 31, 2007.

"Nearly 60,000 homeowners in Suffolk County received their Middle Class STAR rebate application letter late because of a mailing error," said Senator Marcellino. ‘While it appears everyone due to receive the rebate has or will have the application letter soon, the unanticipated delay could lead many homeowners to miss the deadline to apply, as homeowners cannot submit their applications without a personal identification code found on the mailed form."

"Every New Yorker who is eligible for the rebate should have a reasonable amount of time to complete the application. I know it has been difficult for some people to reach the STAR HOTLINE at 1-877-678-2769. This Legislation gives people extra time to complete the application and receive the rebate. Property Taxes are too high, the STAR rebate helps hard pressed homeowners and no one should be denied their rebate due to short application period," said Assemblyman Bob Sweeney.

This legislation provides homeowners statewide an additional month to apply for their rebate check. Some homeowners may still be under the impression that the rebate check will be mailed to their homes automatically, as it was last year.

The legislation will benefit all homeowners who are eligible for he rebate and for whatever reason need additional time to complete the application.

The bill will now be sent to the Governor to be signed into law.
