Senator Fuschillo Presents Liberty Medal To Hero Teen From Bellmore

Charles J. Fuschillo Jr.

Senator Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr. (8th Senate District) today presented the New York State Senate’s Liberty Medal to Kennedy High School senior Thomas Rosati of Bellmore for heroically saving the lives of 3 Bethpage boys. Senator Fuschillo was joined by Assemblyman David G. McDonough (19th Assembly District).

"Thomas’ quick thinking saved several lives and spared a family from falling victim to a terrible tragedy," said Senator Fuschillo. "Thomas is a shining example of the great deeds of which people are capable, and we are all very proud of his heroic actions."

Thomas earned the Liberty Medal by saving the lives of three boys who had fallen through the ice on the canal behind his home on the morning of February 18th. Thomas’ mother heard the 3 boys screaming after the ice they were standing on gave way. After being awakened by his mother’s cry for help, Thomas ran barefoot out into the freezing cold, dressed only in a t-shirt and boxer shorts.

While his mother called 911, Thomas ran down two flights of stairs and vaulted a fence towards the dock. Once there, he laid on his stomach and with one arm pulled each of the three boys out of the freezing cold water to safety.

Created in 2000, the New York State Senate Liberty Medal is one of the highest civilian honors that a New Yorker can receive. Similar to the national Congressional Gold Medal, the award is given to individuals who have merited special commendation for exceptional, heroic, or humanitarian acts and achievements on behalf of their fellow New Yorkers.
